The Late Summer Farmlands Habitat program is designed to provide habitat for migratory shorebirds, early arriving wintering waterfowl and other waterbirds. This Late Summer program requires the maintenance of shallow flooded conditions, using either flood irrigation or subsurface drip tape, on fallow or harvested fields that are managed to minimize crop stubble and vegetation. Enrolled acreage must be fully flooded by the selected program start date and maintained for 5 weeks between July 14 and September 30. Weeks 1-3: flood up to 4 inches. Weeks 4-5: evaporative drawdown and maintain moist soil conditions. For sloping fields, the deep end may be greater than 4 inches, and the shallow end should have moist soil conditions or mudflats.
