BirdReturns | A Decade of Habitat, A Future for Birds.

In the last decade BirdReturns has partnered with 200 growers and wetland managers in the Central Valley to convert 180,000 acres into temporary wetlands for migratory birds. It’s a win for the birds as they make their way from the Arctic to the Equator and a win for the growers and wetland managers who have received $6 million in direct payments for their participation.

See the birds and hear from program participants, TNC staff, our partners at Audubon California and Point Blue Conservation Science, and more to find out what BirdReturns brings to California and where it’s going next!

A Road Trip Like No Other | Notes from the Field

Senior Nature Conservancy Scientist Greg Golet is up before the sun in the Sacramento Valley searching for migratory shorebirds. His goal? To understand the birds traveling the Pacific Flyway so TNC programs like BirdReturns can do even more to help them. Join Greg with the latest episode of Notes From The Field to see science in action, from a network of radio transmitters to tiny backpacks for birds!

Now in its tenth year, BirdReturns pays California growers to flood their idle fields for a few weeks, creating temporary wetland habitat when birds need it most and generating income for farmers.

A Fighting Chance | Point Blue Conservation Science

A short film that answers key questions about why conserving and restoring wetlands is so important, what we can learn from the birds that depend on them, and how local communities can be part of the conservation solution.
