BirdReturns Programs

BirdReturns partners with farmers and wetland managers across California’s Central Valley to create seasonal habitat for wetland-dependent birds through simple, incentive-based water management practices.

Our flexible programs provide financial support while helping sustain working lands and create critical habitat for local and migratory bird populations. Learn more about where we work →

When do Central Valley birds need habitat?

Wetland-dependent birds — local and migratory — need flooded habitat throughout their life cycle, from migration and nesting to brood-rearing and molting. BirdReturns fills seasonal habitat gaps, providing habitat when it matters most.

Wynette Sills

“The opportunity to provide habitat to migratory waterbirds, including ducks, geese, sandhill cranes, and shorebirds, has blended very well with and provided complementary benefits to our Regenerative Organic Certified Rice farming rotation, but could be a positive addition to any farming operation.”

Any time you can find some money that can help you stretch your dollars to do more for habitat and wildlife, that’s kind of a no-brainer. Without wildlife and without wild things, so too we will go.

This little black-necked stilt was hatched for just a few hours. His two siblings were already walking around in the swamp for a day and there’s one last egg in the nest. Mama waited for this new hatchling to dry then decided to guide him to the swamp so
